Wingate is a finance and investment house, with teams specialising in property, global equities, consumer and asset finance and private equity. Wingate is owned by its principals and a group of substantial private and institutional investors. The Group is widely regarded as one of Australia’s leading specialist finance and investment houses.

Wingate is known for its exceptional track record, unique risk management culture, discretion, reach and influence. Wingate originates, manages and delivers investment opportunities across select asset classes for its private and institutional co-investment partners in Australia and internationally.

Wingate was launched as a finance and investment house by Farrel Meltzer over a decade ago with a vision to revive the old European family merchant banking tradition. This meant bringing an unusually measured approach to risk into a market riding high on buoyant returns. It proved a difficult time to find assets with the risk profile and price to fit that approach and the business expanded slowly. After securing some advisory deals and boutique financings, 2005 saw expansion into asset management with a global equities fund.

Wingate’s prudent investment approach and focus on risk meant that the Group entered the Global Financial Crisis conservatively and cautiously positioned. Consequently Wingate was able to substantially accelerate its growth during and post the GFC and enter asset classes others had been forced to exit. This resulted in rapid growth in the Group’s range of activities, funds under management and other metrics in the ensuing years.

Our Approach

Character is destiny. Why Wingate is distinctively different.

External Recognition

Wingate’s exceptional performance track record and deeply committed business approach have been increasingly independently recognised by the market.

Put simply, Wingate is about making smart investments and producing exceptional investment returns. The group has a strong track record of both, with 43% compound annual growth of funds under management and outstanding historical investor returns.

Our Team

Wingate has built a leadership team with an extraordinary range of skills and experience, but sharing a common set of values and investment approach.

There has been a notable stability in the core team over many years, while new people have been regularly added to broaden and deepen capacity.

Wingate Property (WP)

WP provides capital solutions for property owners/developers and investment opportunities for clients. Having established itself as arguably the leading player in its sector, WP has funded over $5 billion in property value since 2008 via the investment of more than $1 billion. More than half of our transactions have matured, realising average net pre-tax investor returns of approximately 20% p.a. WP has a pristine performance track record with 100% capital preservation on all transactions to date.

Wingate Property Focus

WP invests across the capital structure, with a particular focus on development mezzanine debt, preferred equity and equity, as well as non-construction stretch and bridging senior debt. WP is also active in direct property acquisition and syndication.

Preferred Equity and Equity Investment

Applying the Wingate approach to risk, WP has established strong relationships with its developer partners, several of which have been developed over multiple transactions. It is these relationships that have resulted in a large proportion of WP’s preferred equity and equity investments. This provides equity returns for clients with excellent track records and helps Wingate’s best developer partners expand. This approach represents a considered strategy to build on established relationships, while still carefully selecting and structuring transactions to actively reduce risk. With a reputation as a responsive and reliable partner that always delivers on commitments in a timely fashion, WP has enjoyed strong demand from Australia’s better private developers and property owners.

Senior Debt Investment

In addition, Wingate has made several senior debt investments. These are generally in unique circumstances where Wingate’s provision of debt has not been in competition with traditional senior lenders, but has relied on its ability to:

  • Act quickly, often having evaluated, structured, documented and funded transactions within a few weeks, whilst not compromising security, risk or due diligence requirements;
  • Provide “blended” senior and mezzanine debt packages, beyond traditional senior gearing levels;
  • Understand, evaluate, assess and mitigate risks and exit opportunities outside of traditional banking paradigms; and/or
  • Structure transactions incorporating collateral security and other credit enhancing mechanisms, enabling them to proceed where others were unable to do so.

Property Approach

WP’s success has been and will continue to be built on striving for “complete diligence” in managing risk. Review and approval processes reflect the Wingate Way and include alignment of interest through co-investment by the Group and its executives, together with fee structures that are weighted to success.

Wingate Asset Management (WAM)

Wingate Asset Management (WAM) is a specialist global equity manager. WAM’s distinctly different approach to international equity investment is designed to deliver a smoother and more consistent return profile.

A Unique Investment Approach

The investment team’s philosophy and process is designed to lower volatility and actively reduce the risk of loss – but without sacrificing long-term returns. This is achieved by combining a fundamental value approach to stock selection with a unique implementation process.

Key Benefits of WAM’s Investment Strategy:

  • Capturing most of the market’s gains while minimising losses when markets decline;
  • Delivering less volatile returns; and
  • Generating consistent income

By forgoing some of the extremes in upside potential, the investment process defends against much greater downside in declining markets and delivers more stable returns. In other words, returns are disproportionate to the risk taken, precisely because risk has been actively reduced.

Research Ratings

WAM’s investment strategy has been independently researched by institutional asset consultants and research houses. Please contact us directly for more information on external research ratings.

This market segment is made up of employed credit worthy applicants who don’t always easily fit the banks targeted customer profile.

The system is easy to use, quick and allows the user to better manage the loan application process with efficient credit decisions and feedback from the credit and settlements team.

WCF’s service team has clearly defined service level requirements and KPIs which far exceed industry norms. This combination of service, technology, and product design has allowed the business to quickly establish itself as a highly credible, trusted and fast growing financier in a very exciting segment of the Australian consumer market.

  • Prime Residential Mortgages;
  • Non-conforming Residential Mortgages;
